- Clear a path at least 60 feet long and 12 feet wide for the delivery truck

- Confirm the surface can support the weight (grass and gravel work, but soft or wet ground can cause ruts)
Street or Curbside Placement: Permit Likely Required
If there’s no room on your property and the dumpster needs to sit on a public street, curb, or right-of-way, that’s a different story. Most municipalities in North Carolina require a right-of-way or obstruction permit for any container placed on public roadway, and rules vary by city or county:
- Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have their own encroachment permit process for dumpsters placed on city streets
- Smaller municipalities in Union, Cabarrus, and Stanly counties may have simpler processes but still typically require notice to the local public works department
- HOA communities may have their own placement restrictions even when a city permit isn’t required
Because requirements differ block by block, we recommend checking with your local city or county office directly before the delivery date. Permits, when needed, are usually inexpensive and quick to process, but they can take a few business days — so it’s worth checking early if street placement is your only option.

For active construction or renovation sites, permit requirements can also depend on the scope of the project itself, separate from the dumpster placement. If you already have building permits pulled for the job, ask your local permitting office whether an additional obstruction permit is needed for waste containers.
